1. Brooks Glycerin 20

This increased responsiveness becomes more noticeable the longer you run, making the Glycerin 20 an exceptional marathon shoe for novice runners.
The high price of this shoe may discourage newer runners, but considering its ability to withstand miles of training and provide a positive race day experience, I believe it is worth the investment. However, if the price is still too steep for you, my next recommendation may be a better choice.
2. Puma Velocity Nitro 2
The Puma Velocity Nitro 2 is an excellent running shoe with ample cushioning that is suitable for various types of running. With its nitrogen-infused midsole foam, this shoe provides a comfortable and energetic ride, making it perfect for training runs. It is also a great choice for marathon running, particularly for beginners or those who are not excessively focused on their finishing time.
With its excellent outsole that provides solid traction on both light trails and roads, the shoe’s durability is enhanced. Overall, there are few flaws to be found with the Nitro 2. Even if it were priced similarly to other cushioned options at $150/£140 or more, it would still be one of my top choices. Therefore, at $120/£100, it’s an absolute steal.
3. Nike Vaporfly 3
The Nike Vaporfly 3 offers increased comfort and cushioning compared to the Vaporfly 2 without compromising on speed and agility. If this combination appeals to you as the ideal carbon racing shoe, I completely concur. According to my testing, it is the most superior racing shoe available.
The additional foam that Nike has included in the midsole of the third edition shoe will provide a valuable safeguard for your legs during a marathon. In comparison to previous marathons where I set personal records, I found the Vaporfly 3 to be considerably more comfortable during the final stages of the London Marathon 2023.
The redesigned outsole on the Vaporfly 3 lacks durability, with several runners experiencing flaking rubber at the back of the shoe. Although mine has remained intact for 80 miles, it shouldn’t be expected to last, as this shoe prioritizes speed over longevity.
4. Saucony Endorphin Speed 3
Since I first tried the initial version of the Saucony Endorphin Speed, it has become one of my favorite shoes. With its nylon plate and responsive foam in the midsole, the line provides a comfortable yet speedy running experience. It is almost as fast as a carbon shoe but more suitable for everyday training. If you are looking for a single shoe to use for all your training and then achieve a fast time on race day, it is the optimal option.
The Speed 3 has undergone more changes compared to the Speed 1, similar to the Endorphin Speed 2. These changes include a wider base and the addition of winglets on its plate for increased stability. Additionally, the shoe now provides a wider fit to satisfy individuals who found the previous versions too narrow.
5. Saucony Tempus
The Tempus offers a distinct feeling compared to other stability shoes, with its gentle and cushioned ride and relatively light design. It’s an excellent option for daily training for all runners, and even as a neutral runner, I highly regard the Tempus as one of my preferred running shoes due to its adaptable and steady performance.
The midsole of the shoe features PWRRUN PB foam, known for its springiness. Surrounding this foam is a firmer material that helps to align your foot into a neutral position while running. This combination provides an optimal balance of support and enjoyment. As a versatile shoe, the Tempus is suitable for various types of runs, including easy runs, tempo efforts, and longer races such as marathons.
6. Asics Gel-Nimbus 25
When it comes to marathon training, shoes with a substantial amount of midsole foam are ideal, and the Asics Gel-Nimbus 25 provides a significant level of comfort to ensure an effortless running experience. Despite the generous amount of cushioning, these shoes have a lightweight feel and deliver a smooth and soft ride, without compromising on support.
